I think Master Grayson means that the fact that they were under the control of the senate allowed Palps and his pals to destroy their order more easily than if they had been a separated from it.

As for Daala, she was an admiral in the Impy Navy that from the Jedi Academy trilogy an onward began a lot of trouble for the NR/GA.

I must say I really like the character of Nom Anor, backstabbing and a bastard. But he's Admiral Daala level competent, which sadly fell out of style after NJO it seems. (I must admit, I read ahead a bit

I used the Force to shield myself from other peoples energy at a funeral, because the negative assault was to much. Got trough the bad part and let the shield down when the good part came about.

The above is simply stated of course but I think you get the general action/reaction equation.

Oh. Okay, here there be SPOILERS.

Well I haven't finished it completly yet (thought it was the whole of february to read it but as for the "purpose" of the book I would say that it is setting up how new and strange the Vong really are to anything the Skywalker-Solo family has fought before, thus leading into the war and the rest of the series. Philosophically, it starts right of with the question how "how much should a group like the Jedi really be allowed to do?" or "how much should they allow themselves to do?"

Wurth Skidder is doing good things, but is impulsive and seems more concerned with getting another kill-mark on his X-wing cockpit than looking at the big picture, should such a man be allowed to make decisions affecting others?

Likewise one could feel that Luke Skywalker is to cautious, allowing bad to flourish based on indecisiveness. I feel that a major part of the book deals with how much is too much and how little is too little, and also raises the discussion about the most powerful warriors being exempt from the ruling body of a country/planet/galaxy.

Haven't touched on the major event in the book, but this should be enough to get us started

It does however point at another aspect of the "need or no" part of the question, Cyrnal, the social pressure to be sad. Your family, and friends expects, short of demands that you feel sad on their timetable. Not your own.

So one could say that the reason we still have the negative energy filled ceremonies is the resistance from tradition?

Excellent thread and good question. Like pressure right at the base of my skull, lighter at times, harder at times but always there.

Personally I feel that one shouldn't focus on one aspect, but rather go into meditation without the goal to "fix this" or "solve that" .The Force provides a solution to problems in its own time. By meditating one opens oneself up to a solution even if its not the one you sought at that particular moment.

With meditation (however we do it) we focus ourself so that we, I believe, are able both to organize our impressions of the physical world as well as the spiritual.
