Why we eat too much.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wb-6fhfAn2I
We’re hugely invested in the idea that the cause of obesity lies with diet – and that we should therefore solve the problem with kale and apple soup (and other such products). But the real cause of obesity has nothing to do with food. It lies in our emotional under-nourishment. We will start to eat less when we feel more connected, more understood and more in touch with our feelings.

Though I don't believe the huge amount of sugar that tends to follow modern day eating helps much either :D

But I definitely see a point here.

One interesting thing is that most of us hunger for something. Food, power, control, sex, drugs, it's interesting that some people have certain amounts of control over their desires and others lack this control to the point of knowing they can end up in prison yet repeatedly do it anyway.

Another interesting thing is that we may have complete control of say our eating habits, medium control when it comes to seeking power, and zero control over something else, to the point it becomes a demon in our lives and appears to control us.

I do have my theories why this is so and it's an interesting point to meditate on as it points to the reasons of our existence.

Definitely. In that perspective, I've got a hunger for control that I'm aware of, but only partially master. Not control over others, but myself and the situations I'm in. I've been called a control-freak by those who know me well more often than I can count; guess I just felt helpless and not in control so much as a child/teen, that I developed as I did. To me, control represents safety, predictability and protection against harm. Nobody likes being harmed or be in pain; yet some of the means we utilize to protect ourselves, end up causing more suffering than the initial situation would have. There's this faulty thinking deeply ingrained in me that says; if you plan for every potential bad outcome and prepare yourself for it in advance, you'll lessen the hurt when it happens. Which causes anxiety and stress over potential (more or less likely) issues, that often turn out to not be a problem at all. I've been working on silencing that voice, and trusting that come what may; I can deal with whatever the moment brings when and if it happens.

It's a common issue though. What we think we need to be OK, becomes part of the overall problem. Same reason a lot of people become addicted to booze or narcotics. They're escaping pain and hurt by turning to something that in turn causes more pain and hurt in the long run. Nobody wants to be an addict, nobody wants to lose their freedom, and yet that's often how it plays out for many. Even when we're aware, it can be a long road to go towards spiritual freedom from all our "needs" and "wants". Human beings are programmed to seek pleasure, and avoid pain; yet our attempts to avoid suffering, tends to cause suffering all on its own.
